Thanks Giving

With our palms together and heartful of thanks, every year, we offer our gratitude --
  • We thank our ancestors. Without you we would not have our wonderful genes.

  • We thank our parents. Without you, we would not be born with this body to fulfill our generations of duties.

  • We thank our brother and sisters. Without you, we would not know what companionship is.

  • We thank our teachers. Without you, we would not be exposed to this vast world.

  • We thank our classmates. Without you, we would not have learned about competition and team work.

  • We thank our friends. Without you, we would not have support and caring.

  • We thank our enemies. Without you, we would not be able to learn who we are.

  • We thank our spouse. Without you, we would be incomplete.

  • We thank our kids. Without you, we would not have a family.

  • We thank our society. Without you, we would not have all the utilities, comfort, food, transportation, etc.

  • We thank our Chan Master. Without you, we would not be aware that we are deluded by our mind.

  • Without these blessings, our live will be a mess. Then, how do we reciprocate?

    Where Is Buddhaland?

Buddhaland is often called the "other shore".

Some say, it is the shore beyond our comfort zone. It does require a courageous heart and a complete non-judgmental mind to surpass our comfort zone. Too often we categorize the unfamiliar form or formless in our lives, in order to give us excuses for not to face, explore or accept. These are all workings of our mind.

The boat that could ferry us to the other shore is called the "As Is". Once we possesses the As Is attitude, we can go anywhere.

Once we get to the other shore, then we would realize how small and limited our comfort zone was. Then we could also realize clearly, how we were affected by the karmic hindrance to our body, mind and spirit.

Once we land at Buddhaland, then we could reunite with our comfort zone again with clarity. Then there is no more comfort zone, because every comfort zone, even those we were uncomfortable before, are now comfortable.

Then we are truly one with all.

Shin-Shin Ming begins with, "The way is not hard, just don't pick or choose."

True Practice

True Practice is a spiritual practice.

No matter how we change our thinking, logic, value, methods or theory are all in the domain of our conscious mind.

Because at the end, our entire process are always being manipulated by our Five Poisons.

Five Poisons (Craving, Anger, Attachment, Arrogance, Suspicion) encourages us to find excuses; or let us live in our own righteousness; or stuck in emotional turmoil; or be suspicious of reality no matter how clear.

Five Poisons is the killer who ultimately manipulates our mind.

No matter how we work with our mind, we can not escape from it.

Terminating Five Poisons is the practice which truly liberates our heart and not just calm it down.

    To be One - 心本一

To be one with the One, we seek similarities in our lives, not differences. We are same in our hearts, only differ in form.

Are you seeing a pattern or not?

Everything is in relation to everything. This means there are things
and there are no things. When we see things, we see with relation; when we see no things, we see in pure, seamless, existence. Systems and subsystems are constructions of an organizing brain. No brain, no systems.

Its a beautiful universe if we leave it alone and see it as it is. Some of us find beauty in discriminating patterns; others find beauty in the largest pattern, which is to say, no pattern at all. These are the dependent co-arising truths of Zen.

    Naked Living

We all were originally borne naked.
    Then somehow we were dressed.
Due to our own karma, the dresses we wear were different.
Such as positions, strength, richness, prettiness, knowledge, etc.
Along the way, we learned that these dresses sometimes do obtain recognition from others.
    We felt being loved.

Thus, many of us do become the title, the beauty, the car, the knowledge, or the wife, the man, the hero.

Many of us even wear multiple dresses, one on top of another.
Soon these dresses become part of ourselves and inseparable from our body.
We forgot that we were originally naked and needed nothing and..
We were originally equal and the same.
    And we forgot that....
When we live, we can only drive one car at a time and use only one coffin when we die.

If we could live nakedly, then we all could be on equal footing and be equally defenseless.
Perhaps then we could love each other more.
Perhaps then we all could live our life by focusing on loving each other as is,
without trying to be somebody else or asking others to wear the same dress.

Say Grace - from Yoga Journal

On the surface, gratitude appears to arise from a sense that you're indebted to another person for taking care of you in some way, but looking deeper, you'll see that the feeling is actually a heightened awareness of your connection to everything else.

Gratitude flows when you break out of the small, self-centered point of view—with its ferocious expectations and demands—and appreciate that through the labors and intentions and even the simple existence of an inconceivably large number of people, weather patterns, chemical reactions, and the like, you have been given the miracle of your life, with all the goodness in it today.

When you awaken to the truth of this incredible interconnectedness, you are spontaneously filled with joy and appreciation. It is for this reason that one of the most transformative practices you can engage in is the cultivation of gratitude.

Patanjali wrote that /santosha/ (contentment, or appreciation for what you have) leads to unexcelled joy, while other yogic texts say that this sense of appreciation is the "supreme joy" that naturally leads to the realization of the Absolute.

Thankfully, gratitude can be cultivated. It simply takes practice.

    Win-win

Ken Wilber, the most important philosopher of the 20th century said, "There is a failure to communicate. Each value system (culture) speaks differently. Some cultures speak of the language of "me"; some speak the language of "us"; some speak the language of "all of us."...."

    http://www.odemagazine.com/doc/62/ken-wilber-communication

In Chan, we dedicate ourselves to be one with everyone else. No different than what Ken showed to us, the best way for all of us to be one, is to begin by speaking the language of the other groups. To be more precise, is to manage relationship to be a win-win one.

Or perhaps, I should add, some visibly win and some invisibly win. :-)

    Tolle's Phrases

Just watched a short video of Eckhart Tolle's lecture. Below are what I loved.

"Ego is out of alignment with everything that is going on NOW."

"NOW is the only thing we've got. Future or tonight becomes NOW."

"Being in the NOW is not productive, yet it helps us to appreciate of being alive and beauty."

"Whatever resistance we have NOW, is our ego."

"Accepting everything that is happening NOW, eliminates fear and desire."

Extending from this, I derived the following:

  • Knowledge is by nature incomplete, it needs to continuously feed itself. It is what ego was composed of.

  • Accepting everything as is feels naked and insecure to the ego, because there is nothing we can control or lean on or cover with.
  • To Be Nobody

Most of us probably have enough idea on how to awake ourself. Let us talk about Help Others To Wake Up from within.

At the beginning of my journey, I was so overwhelmed about the depth of Chan, I constantly share the most valuable realization to everyone I met.

During this period, I was at the top of the world. Constantly I was experiencing physical and mental sparks.

Then I realized that all my sharing to others was merely imposing my values to others. I may have benefited through intro-retrospection, but I have managed to alienate myself somewhat from the ones I love.

Then I learned that compassion is not just words, but a true undertaking the karma of others. What does that mean?

No matter how we criticize or beat up the ones we love, it is just a battle between our values and theirs. It is just one mental construct fighting against the other. Both sides loose in this war of forms.

Since every way is the way to awakening, it is actually more effective if we help everyone to complete their journey in their own way.

This requires us to expand our way to include their way, to add their values and vocabularies into ours.

As my path began to expand, I realized gradually that I really need to be truly nobody, in order to be every body.

    Then I could be a friend instead of a teacher, a father, a husband, a boss, a scholar, a PhD, ......

No Man Is An Island - Oneness II

John Donne said, "No man is an island." True.

If you think you are unique as an island, that you are knowledgeable, superior, humble, powerful, influential, etc., in any way different than others, then you are delusional. These recognition are the construct of your mind, based on your incomplete experience, and not your Buddha Nature.
When you think that you are an island, you see everyone else also as an island. A label is usually glued to that island, such as ignorant, superior, preferred or disgusting. Then the world would seem to be confusing and treacherous. You are thus truly lost in your mind.

Wake up from delusional mind got to occur from within. We can whip one to death. We can shout as loud as needed to. In essence, we are doing it only to the mind and not the inner Spiritual Being. Often times worse, our formed communication results in creating higher defense systems, as all ego would usually so react.

If we can, bypass their ego; use our heart; connect to everyone from within, instead of winning the form-war by destroying one's ego.

After all, whether we believe it or not, we are One.

    No man is an island.

    Be One

Chan is One and not two. This statement seems been around for centuries
and it seems that everyone understood the "not two" means that duality
is the product of our mind, such as good or bad, proper or improper,
    right or wrong, etc.

What I like to share with you is the concept of "One". This "One" has
two meanings. On one hand it means the singular life force and wisdom
of the universe. It also means at the same time, "whole" as well as
"entirety". In Chinese we say, "Chan is One. One is ALL. All is One."

Therefore, "One" means the fundamental driving force of the universe as
well as everything that is manifested by it, with and without shape,
    visible as well as invisible.

It is the objective of Chan, not only to be in sync with the life force
and wisdom of the universe, but also accept and be connected with the
cause and effect, of every phenomenon or object, being manifested, no
matter how much our mind dislikes.

Therefore, if someone is sick, or crazy, or dumb, or impolite, or
offensive, or ruthless, it is up to Chan practitioners to embrace to see
through to the cause and harmonize them into the world. Why? Because
    we have the ability.

Be One, is not just being with the enlightened or the super power. Be
One, is be one with the Entire universe, no matter how ugly or
unbearable they are. And be One is be One 24/7 at every moment.

Then the universe can truly be "one and whole and complete" both
    physically and spiritually.

Let us begin by being One with the one closest to you. :-)

Fulfillment

    Wow, he is so stingy.
Wow, she would not let go.
    Oh, he is so foxy.
    Man, he is so slippery.
Boy, he is lost in his own religion.
    You are so irresponsible.
Sad. He just does not understand me.
He has so much loose end.

Yes, these are all attachments. But they are the attachment of others and not our own.
The world is always as is. Everyone of us has our own ego, delusions and helplessness. Mostly are results from karma.
Having recognize the attachment of others is not going to help us. Is it?
Our Teacher teaches that it is our own ego we need to surpass. Look inward and not look outward.
Whatever our insistence, our principles, our position, our values are all construct of our brain.
These are the products of our ego. These are the ones we need to surpass.
If there is no self, where does the position, principles take root. If there is no mind, how can thoughts derive.
Sutra stated, "Buddha is born from the everyday world." We need to enhance our awareness. Constantly watch our thoughts and actions. Surpass our ego and fulfill the needs of every sentient being.
Not waiting to receive "Big" wisdom from deep meditation, but to develop "small" wisdom from the delusions of all sentient beings. Our Teacher teaches in his book, "Chan practice is drop by drop."
We need to let go drop by drop and not waiting for the that big step to instantly be Buddha.
Fulfillment is to melt into the hearts of others, such that we could use their language and their value to enhance their awareness from within.
And not attack their castle and completely defeat them. Both sides loose if this is the method.
I am grateful to his seminar that I have received. Yes, fulfill the needs of others by melting into it and not attacking delusions of others.

    Harmony

Somehow the notion to harmonize often connotes to "lower" or "sacrifice" ourselves in order to fit in with the rest. It is so because most of us consider ourselves "unique" or "above". Was it so because that was the way we were brought up? To be unique? To excel?

If the world is not One and not in Harmony, then where there is a mountain, there could also be a lake. Polar bears could be running side by side with camels in the Sahara desert. Los Angeles could also have rain forest. There could be day and night at the same time, when some of us get up to work, and some of us go to bed.

If the world is One, then All are in harmony. But so what?

There is a time and place for us. (remember the song?) If we "sync to the harmony", then there is always a parking spot for us, no matter how crowded. There is always food for us when we are hungry. Some may say, this sounds optimistic and self-serving. Yes, it is self serving, if we do think so or having strong faith about it. Confused?

"Sync to the harmony" has a prerequisite, "completely let go off our judgmental and anxiety filled mind."

Chan practice does not offer an instance benefit or change. It is a gradually process. It is gradual because it takes time to rid off our 5 poisons and our mental sentient beings.

Let down our insecurity and raise our awareness. Be aware of every encounter that is in front of us and fulfill it with our best foot forward, no matter how meaningless at the time. Continue to deliver and surpass our habitual thoughts and impulses.

Gradually, we shall come to realize that there is a unique journey for each one of us. Everyone of us were born with an unique mission, like every blade of grass and every living being. There is a custom tailored place for everyone of us. We can live joyfully as long as we sync to the universal clock and participate in every activity in front of us.

Be One is to place ourselves at the right place of the universe at the right time 24/7 without judgment.

This is my recent realization to share with you.

Heart Of Others

The reason, that others don't understand us, is because we were not using their language or disconnected from their heart.
When we are in our righteous mind set, we would not notice the true inside need of the others, no matter how obvious.
When we are judging others, we are disconnected from our heart. Thus disconnected from others.

Form & Heart

This is what I have realized today and I shall remind myself of it every time when my mind initiates.

Respond form with form, lost in form.
Respond form with heart, terminates form.
Heart sync with heart, fulfills.

    Smile & At Ease

The ego is composed of two parts, the physical body and the mental construct. It is easy to realize that body is impermanent. It is difficult to realize that our identity of self is also just a compilation of relative and empty forms, such as of principals, success, life styles. Why is it difficult?

Because most of us can let go only some of the principals we live by and not all of it. Then how do we know we have actually rid of the ENTIRE ego?

    * When we no longer felt the need or having the notion to explain or
to defend our thoughts, our principals, our dharma. * When we realize no matter what we have accomplished, they mean
    nothing.
    * When we are at ease at every moment whether we succeed or fail.
    * When we truly surrender to the universe and go with the flow with
    a smile.
    * When are have no rising of any notion what so ever.
    * When we are completely detached from all forms, visible or invisible.

This is the time, we have rid of our mental process and being just a living being, or in my school just an energy being, a being without mental process, yet fully content at every moment and connected to everyone and everything around us.

No matter what we see or hear or encounter, we automatically fulfill with our best foot forward with all our available resources.

I understand

Every time, when I said, "I understand!", it is from my conscious mind and not my Buddha Nature.

    A Story

Somehow, frequently the label of "chi cultivation" was labeled
"irrelevant" or "maya" or "unacceptable" by our discriminating mind.
Today, I will tell you a story instead.

Two students comes to the class to learn to find Buddha Nature.
Teacher: Begin by breathing into your belly and don't think.
    Student OM: ok
    Student DM: why?

    One month later.
Teacher: Can you do belly breathing now.
    Student OM: Yes
Student DM: Can breathing help me to find Buddha Nature?
Teacher: Now pay attention to your navel chakra.
    Student OM: OK
Student DM: Isn't Chakra an Indian term?

    One month later.
Student OM: Oh, I can feel that my chakra is vibrating. Is that normal?
Teacher: Great. Don't worry about it. Now pay attention to the rest of
    your chakra.
    Student OM: Sure.
Student DM: How is this practice related to Buddha Nature?

    One year later
Student OM: Now that all my chakras are vibrating, what shall I do next.
Teacher: Can you forget them all.
Student OM: Yes, when I do that, I feel good, energetic, no worries
    and quite clear headed.
Teacher: Great. Now you are in touch with Buddha Nature.
Student DM: How is that possible? It does not make sense.

This story did not talk about chi at all. Chi cultivation is a label I
gave to this breathing and awareness exercise.

Like love, the only way to understand it is to feel it.

    No word to say

For 1-2 months, I have realized that I have lost the connection to find
words to say in all my classes. Perhaps that's the way it meant to be.
Perhaps it is my own doing. At the same time, my meditation has entered
another state of calm, stillness and light. Are they related? Should I
    "think" about it?

Last week, I thought of my teacher's classes. Most of his classes had
over 2,500 people. Yet frequently at the end of each class, most of the
people I met, informed me that they felt as if the class was one on
one. In other words, each one felt that our teacher was talking to
    each one individually.

    I don't know how.

I only know that I am incapable of doing that now.

    Is or Is Not

    Hi All,

The third patriarch stated in Shin Shin Ming, "just hair width apart, we could be in hell or heaven."
Tao Te Jing stated, "The Way is not hard, if we don't pick or choose."
Diamond Sutra stated, "....The heart dwells no where..."

These are simple references for everyone of us. To be truly free, just make sure that our discriminating mind does not arise 24/7. Just accept, fulfill and harmonize with whatever in front of us with form or without.

Don't even think. Don't analyze. Don't believe anything. Don't suspect anything. Don't hold anything too close, including everything I posted or the sutra stated. Once our mind is stuck on IS or IS NOT, agree or not agree, accept or not accept, We are lost in the formed world, a world of relativity, a world of interpretations, concepts and theories....

Our job as a Chan practitioner is to wake everyone up and help everyone to pierce through absolutes. Free everyone from the mind and raise our original self to be aware on how we are actually living, physically, mentally and spiritually and be liberated from all absolutes, no matter how deeply we treasure. The challenge for us is to accomplish this without taking a position on absolutes ourselves. If we did, then others may dig in their heels and defend their absolutes.

Yes, I often emphasize the importance of a chi practice. It is not absolute either. It is just a bridge, a finger, a road map. An effective way which I have personally witnessed and benefited from. Because it is a simple logic-less practice yet so different from most of the terms and concepts in the western world and quite foreign in the Japanese tradition, it can help the practitioner to cut through the fog, bypass all concepts and words, let go of all reference and quickly realize that we are enslaved by our mind.

Is this the only way? No. Everyone of us has our own journey, which is affected by our own karma, our causality affinity and our available resources in current life.

Anyone, no matter how famous, reliable, trusting, venerable, or unimportant, wrong, distasteful, suggests anything, we must not judge, compare, ignore. Just listen carefully, try it and let go.

Anytime when we believed something strongly, we need also to realize at the same time, whatever we think or say, we can only present a limited number of perspectives during a finite set of time. It is important for us to modify our perspective every time on the same subject, so that we do not create a situation where the target listener needs to dig in their heels and defend themselves, because by then, we have enhanced their attachments instead of dissolve it. Or in other perspective, we have created more karma instead of reduce it.

Therefore, there is nothing IS or IS NOT. Everything is as is.

If we are capable of accepting every moment as is, understand and accept every form, logic, disagreement whole-heartedly then we are truly free. Because only when our mind is as big as the universe accepting everything that is going on, then we are complete and not partial. We are then one with the universe. We will no longer have doubt, worry, anger, disappointment, etc.

Let us work on it together.

    Stop & Focus

Translated from Chan Master Miao Tian 12/20/1989 -

Sitting Chan is composed of two parallel practices, "stop" and "focus". As we sit, we eradicate all karmic blockade from our desire, forms and formless. And simultaneously raise the wisdom we were born with.

Sit to stop thinking. Stop our mental activities, while we focus on our heart and inner self. The essence of Sitting Chan is really formless. When our Inner Self arises, our conscious mind automatically stops functioning. Platform Sutra by the Sixth Patriach stated, "There is only one way - focus on our heart."

Chan Master Gu-Te drew a circle to illustrate the essence of Chan. In Taoism, it means the universe. In Confuciusm, it means all living beings in an endless cycle without beginning or end. In Chan, it is our Inner Self. It is pure, bright and also the same Self of the Universe. Heart, Buddha and Sentient Being are one the same, the Universal Self. One is all and all is one.

If so, then why practice? Yes, originally there is no need to practice and nothing to witness. Yet our delusional conscious filled with desires covered up our Inner Self. This is the reason we need to practice by purifying our delusional mind, turn the formless dharma wheel, gradually unifying our body and mind with the universe, and let our True Self shine through. Therefore, when our heart shine, delusions are broken, then Inner Self will show.

Therefore use our mind to understand Chan, or to chant or memorize Chan are in reality mental activities trying to practice "stop". These practices involving our conscious are still in the domain of craving, anger and attachment. The only way to let our Inner Self shine through is to "stop" all mental activity, or be absolutely thoughtless. The purpose of this "stop" practice is to have no arising of any notion whatsoever at every moment. This is the highest level of this "stop" practice one could reach, it is also called the gradual method of practice.

Linage Chan emphasizes more on the practice of "focus". The key of focusing is to focus without focusing as well as not focusing but focus. It is a formless practice focusing on the wisdom of the inner self, which arises from the stillness of focusing, when stillness and focus are one. When the Inner Self arises, it automatically shines through all the karmic clouds without any conscious effort. This is the sudden method of practice. Therefore Linage Chan practice is not about quantity but about quality. It is the quality of one's focus in the practice that is important and not the volume of it. Linage Chan is a wisdom practice. Only true wisdom can break through delusion. Quality changes thus quantity changes. From one into all.

Sitting Chan gradually brings one into sudden awareness. As it cleans up karmic blockade of the Three Realms, it raises our Inner Awareness at the same time. Stillness and wisdom together enables harmonization of all things and phenomena. Spiritual and physical strength both are enhanced. This is the only way to satisfy both the physical world and the spiritual world, as well as the formed world and the formless world.

This is the only way to rid of all karma, ferry oneself as well as others and be a Buddha.

    My Journey of Knowing....

For about 4-5 years, I was on a roll. I was so happy that every now and then I either understood more or deeper of our Teaching. During these years, I often shared quotations I treasured earnestly. I was on top of a mountain of jewels.

Then I began to differentiate, categorize, compare and sort through my precious findings. In this pursuit of absolute truth, I continued to fine-tune my thoughts, upgraded my logic process. Though I sometimes even did a complete reboot, I was having fun. I was excited. Truth is getting closer.

Then one day I said to myself, "I know now. Now I know completely and absolutely. Now I know the absolute truth. I know everything what my teacher was trying to teach." Wow, I was in heaven.

You know what? Since the first "I know", I can't count how many times that the "I know" was replaced by the new "I now really know."

Then I realized that all knowing is for the conscious mind which is in a complete separate domain from my spiritual domain. I shared my realization at our Monterey Retreat, "Words is in a parallel world on top of the world of life force. These two domains never intersect and one can not experience one through the other."

There is nothing needed to know. And there is nothing to know.

All discussions are to satisfy our conscious mind. Of course to many, especially me, it is an avoidable journey.

Then I realized that I actually learn more by applying what I have learned through other sentient beings. I see myself in each of them. There is so much beyond the sutras and the books. Every moment is a lesson for me. Just be still, don't try to know, open my heart, sync through my chi, dharma will unfold itself and wisdom always come.

I wish each of you a fruitful 2009.

Perhaps I may need to add, there is no fruit. :-)
